City Island Reviewed

By Derrick Carney

City Island is a quirky and funny movie, released in April of this year, about a family who can only keep secrets from each other. They have such a hard time telling the truth, that they are finding it hard to keep track of all the lies. Actress Julianna Margulies plays Joyce Rizzo, the mother and wife, and Emmy Nominated Andy Garcia plays the father, Vince Rizzo. One of the main secrets in the film is Garcia's character's wish to become an actor. He's been attending acting courses every week but know one knows of his burning desire.

This little film was nominated and won the audience award at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival, the year the movie was made. This is a very prestigious award because it comes from those who are attending the film festival, everyday movie-goers and critics alike all had something great to say about this film. As with most film festivals, distributors bring their newly printed films in order to generate talk or buzz about their project. Since the film won the audience award, people really seemed to like this movie about a dysfunctional film where everyone can keep a secret.

Everyone in this dysfunctional family unit is hiding something from the rest of the family, a large secret that they believe would destroy their parents and the way everyone things about them. Garcia, the father of this film and the star of the very popular Ocean's movie franchises, is hiding the fact that he desperately wants to become an actor. Garcia's wife, performed perfectly by Margulies of televisions The Good Wife, hides her smoking and is often sneaking around trying to catch Garcia's character in bed with another woman, something she won't find.

Other cast members include a collage-attending daughter, or she's supposed to be, who is actually hiding the fact she is a stripper. This character is portrayed by Dominik Garca-Lorido who was in Lost City. The couple's youngest son, played by Ezra Miller from TV's Californication is also hiding a secret. He has a fetish and it has something to do with the family's 300 lbs neighbor. Playing Garcia's characters drama coach is Emmy Award Winner Alan Arkin of Little Miss Sunshine who also hides some deep issues.

What makes the movie interesting and the big reason for 'why today?' is because the elder Rizzo became inspired by one of his acting exercises, so much so that he decided to find his long-lost son, Tony, played by Steven Strait from 10,000 BC. Having a long-lost son who happens to be an ex-con throws fire on an already supercharged situation and of course, hilarity ensues.

Emily Mortimer of the movie Shutter Island gives a performance of the elder Rizzo's confidant and acting partner. Mortimer and Garcia's chemistry is almost perfect in this quirky and almost always funny movie for the most laughs and best chemistry, money is on Margulies' and Garcia. They play a typical New York married couple whose miscommunications and constant love-hate yelling will steal the show.

The title of the movie is named after a small town that actually exists on the outskirts of the Bronx's and is rich in family traditions. There seems to be no 'outsiders' living in the actual community and parents and grandparents pass down their homes to their children when they become too old to care for them. This town used to be a shipping retreat and basically only those in the Bronx and Manhattan know about it, until now.

This movie came out in April of 2010 and the Blu-Ray and DVD release date is scheduled for August 24, 2010. In addition to his acting duties, Andy Garcia is also one of the many producers, joining several co-producers and executive producers. The film was written and directed, as a labor of love by Raymond De Felitta. - 40730
