Opera - Who Was Tchaikovsky?

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born to a reasonably well-off family on May 7th 1840 in Votkinsk Russia. The young Tchaikovsky was considered to be precocious and was already accomplished in the languages of German and French by the age of just 6. He began piano lessons at the age of 5 and showed a natural aptitude saying that music playing in his head kept him awake at night. Tchaikovsky lost his mother to cholera when he was 14 and never got over the loss.

Tchaikovsky's parents initially supported the furthering of his musical talents, however not realizing the extent of his ability it was eventually decided that he would be better off studying for a more stable career in the civil service. He was sent to the School of Jurisprudence at the age of 10 and did not study music seriously for quite some time while attending the school. After his graduation in 1859 he returned to the study of music and began taking lessons at the St Petersburg Conservatory. In 1863 he resigned from his job with the civil service so that he could study music full time.

Freed from his job in the civil service Tchaikovsky was once again able to return to the full time study of music. He enrolled at the St Petersburg Conservatory and was mentored by Anton Rubenstein the director and founder of the Conservatory. Tchaikovsky learned instrumentation and composition under Rubenstein and graduated with flying colors from the conservatory in 1865.

Tchaikovsky began to complete several notable compositions between 1865 and 1892 and on October 25th 1875 his third symphony premiered in Boston. His works were notable for their melodic qualities and Tchaikovsky is considered to be the master composer for classical ballet. During this time he composed some of his most well loved works - Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker. As his reputation as a composer began to grow in Europe he entered into an ill-fated marriage that only lasted for 9 weeks.

Tchaikovsky never got over the loss of his mother and suffered much emotional turmoil throughout his life. Although his private life was troubled he continued to enjoy great success professionally and travelled to many places. In 1891 he toured America conducting his works but conducting was never something he felt comfortable doing. Pathetique, Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony received its premiere in October 1893 but was initially met with a lukewarm reception. Eventually the piece received much greater acclaim.

It is widely believed the Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking contaminated water. He died just a week after the premiere of the Sixth Symphony, Pathetique, in November 1893 and never knew that it would later be considered to be one of his and indeed one of the greatest musical works of all time. - 40730

Composition is really just slowed down improvisation. We take the initial inspirational gem we've discovered through improv and flush it out using the tools of repetition and contrast. For example, in the lesson "Waiting for Spring," we learn how to create a simple ABA form in the Key of C.

The vital thing here is that we already realize the piece will be an ABA form so how do we move forward? Easily! The way I do it is I write out the first 8-bars and then improvise to see what will come up. Once I'm onto something, I write out the first 2-bars of the melody so I can remember it. Then I use chords from the Key of C Major to finish the first 8-bars; my (A) section. Another 8-bars or so for my (B) section and I'm done! The arrangement of this easy piano song usually works itself out to be play the (A) section twice, (B) section once, back to the (A) section and I'm done. Plenty of time, this comes out to at least two to three minutes of music.

Meanwhile, in common disaster movie tradition, the movie jumps between different characters, and how they deal with the slow revelation that something much bigger than they can handle is going on around them. Some of these characters of course come together in the end, and help each other, for the most part, to survive the calamity.

Some of the characters that we meet are fine, upstanding and moral people that we wouldn't mind having as next door neighbors, or even in-laws. Nevertheless, we must watch as they realize that the end is near, and they must accept their fate.

The overall moral message of this movie is that only by working together can humans survive any cataclysmic earth changing event. One troubling element is that in order to survive, various private investors needed to pay billions of dollars to create the vehicle for survival. The ballet Sylvia is based on the play Aminta written by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso. It is a ballet performed in three acts with characters that are taken from mythology. The music used in the ballet is by Lo Delibes the French composer and is often cited as one of Delibes's greatest pieces of work. Unfortunately it could not live up to the acclaim of its music and its debut was met with a lukewarm response. Future performances of Sylvia were also unsuccessful and the ballet all but disappeared from the stage for many years.

It was the renowned dancer and choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton who resurrected the almost forgotten ballet in 1952. However Sylvia still did not receive critical acclaim it is thought largely down to it's complicated plot. Sir Frederick tried to give the ballet more popular appeal reducing it to a one-act piece but Sylvia could still not capture the publics' heart and Ashton eventually gave up on it in 1965. Sir Frederick believed in Sylvia though and had expressed a desire to rework it once again into a three-act ballet. This was picked up on by one of his former students, Christopher Newton, who rewrote Sylvia for the 21st Century audience and a three-act version close to Sir Frederick's vision appeared on stage in 2001.

The main characters in the ballet are Sylvia a nymph huntress and Aminta a young shepherd who is in love with Sylvia. The other protagonists come from mythology - the God of Love Eros and Diana the Goddess of hunting. The malevolent force within the ballet comes in the guise of Orion, a hunter who also desires Sylvia's affections. Various forest creatures, nymphs and dryads provide the ballet's pastoral imagery, with other minor characters such as peasants and hunt attendants featured.

A Sacred wood is the title of the first act of Sylvia and the ballet begins with a ritualistic scene featuring the forest creatures and nymphs dancing for the God Eros. Both Aminta and Sylvia stumble upon the scene and while Aminta remains hidden Sylvia and her hunt attendants make themselves known and mock Eros. Sylvia shoots an arrow at the hidden Aminta, not realizing it is her ardent suitor, but injures both Eros and Aminta with her arrow. The malevolent force in the play is Orion who is also in love with Sylvia and he has been watching the whole scene unfold and he uses the ensuing confusion as an opportunity to kidnap Sylvia.

Act two is titled Orion's Island Cave, which is the location Orion brings the kidnapped Sylvia to. Sylvia stubbornly refuses all offers of kindness such as jewelry and wine from Orion with her only thoughts focused on the wounded Aminta. She fakes a change of heart, getting Orion drunk on the wine so that she can make her escape. After invoking the God of love Eros, Sylvia receives a vision that Aminta is waiting for her at the temple of the Goddess Diana and with the help of Eros escapes from Orion.

The final act - The Sea Coast Near The Temple Of Diana - sees Sylvia and Aminta briefly reunited however Orion is fast to catch up with them and starts to fight with Aminta. During the fight Orion tries to enter Diana's shrine, which is forbidden making the Goddess angry and she refuses to allow Aminta and Sylvia to be together. However all is not lost as God of love Eros presents Diana with a vision of her own young love. The memory of this past love results in Diana reversing her decision and Sylvia and Amintas' union is allowed with the good will of the Gods. - 40730

"'The Cartel' examines lots of different aspects of public education, tenure, funding, patronage drops, corruption --meaning larceny -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. "And as such it sort of serves as a swift-moving primer on all of the red-hot topics inside the education-reform drive."

"The Cartel" first appeared on the festival circuit in summer 2009, appearing in theaters countrywide a year later. It consequently proceeds the more-recently released, while higher profile, education docudrama "Waiting for Superman," directed by Davis Guggenheim ("An Inconvenient Truth").
