Movie Assessment: Voyage Into Space - A Japanese Classic

By Jessica J. Janeson

Japanese monster movies have long been a favorite of movie goers around the world for many reasons. They are fascinating, they are creative, and often times they carry a strong moral message. "Voyage Into Space" is no different. If you love a movie that is thrilling and dramatically stunning at the same time, you won't be disappointed with this classic masterpiece.

Our parable kicks off with a top secret government group creating a giant android that will guard the earth against any and all distant invaders. The machine is constructed to be controlled by a guiltless looking timepiece that doubles as an advanced communication device. The only caution is that the original character who communicates to the massive robot through the watch communication mechanism will be the one who it will eternally be subservient too.

And the person who speaks first to the colossal android is of course a juvenile, simple boy. He is only playing when he first picks up the watch, unintentionally of course, and speaks to the android. But picture his amazement when the android obeys his every demand, and obediently protects the boy from all manner of damage that comes his way during this classic section of film making.

At first, it would seem that the boy has discovered a dependable pal, proficient of shooting missiles from his fingertips, and picking the boy up and taking him on swift trips around the globe. But this, of course, can't last very long as the earth is soon invaded by terrible distorted aliens from the far reaches of space. This is when the actual test of their comradeship is determined. Will the boy and his newfound robot friend risk all to protect the earth? Will they even be triumphant?

At first it comes across as as if the android will be triumphant and shelter the earth from the invading monsters, but all is not well. The invading monster is made from a exceedingly volatile material, and if he is shot, the whole earth will be smashed. So shooting the alien dead is not an alternative for our potent android hero. He must respond to the worldwide hazard with drastic actions indeed.

And in a gloomy allegory of self sacrifice, the robot grabs the monster, and carries him deep into the depths of space, where he will pose no risk to the guiltless people of the earth. This, of course, leaves the youngster without his acquaintance, but he learns a indispensable moral. Sometimes you must go to extreme sacrifices to rescue your acquaintances, even to the point of sacrificing your own life. If you would like to watch a interesting picture with a intense moral message, look no further than "Voyage Into Space. - 40730
